Frequently Asked Questions — Water & Wastewater Treatment in Mauritius

Everything you need to know about sewage treatment plants, AQUATO technology, WMA regulations, ultrafiltration and industrial water purification.

Is a private sewage treatment plant mandatory for hotels in Mauritius?
Yes. In Mauritius, all hotels with more than 75 rooms are required by law to have a dedicated on-site sewage treatment plant. Properties located outside the public sewer network — including most resorts, IRS/RES estates, rural commercial facilities and remote hotels — also require a private wastewater treatment system compliant with Wastewater Management Authority (WMA) discharge standards. The WMA monitors all private treatment plants through annual inspections and monthly Effluent Analysis Reports. We design every system to fully comply with current Mauritian environmental regulations.
What is AQUATO technology and why do you use it?
AQUATO is a leading German manufacturer of compact biological sewage treatment plants, headquartered in Alzenau, Germany. Their systems use certified SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) and SSB (Submerged Sludge Bed) biological technology to produce tertiary-quality treated effluent meeting European discharge standards — in a minimal installation footprint. We are authorised installers of AQUATO systems in Mauritius and the Indian Ocean region, chosen for proven reliability in tropical climates, low energy consumption, simple maintenance and minimal sludge production.
How much does a sewage treatment plant cost in Mauritius?
The cost of a sewage treatment plant depends on population equivalent (PE), technology, discharge quality required and site conditions. A small residential STP for a villa or small guesthouse (10-20 PE) typically ranges Rs 500,000 to Rs 1.2 million. Hotel and resort systems (100-500 PE) can range from Rs 3 million to Rs 15 million depending on capacity and treatment level. Industrial wastewater systems and specialised high-load treatment projects are priced individually based on effluent characteristics and flow rates. Every quotation includes a technical study, sizing calculations and WMA compliance design.
Can I reuse treated wastewater for irrigation?
Yes. Properly treated wastewater can be reused for landscape irrigation, golf courses, agricultural applications and toilet flushing — providing fresh water savings of up to 50% for hotels, resorts and large estates. In Mauritius, treated effluent reuse for irrigation requires specific compliance with EPA 2002 and WMA standards: 15 regulated parameters must be met and monthly Effluent Analysis Reports submitted. Our AQUATO and RBC systems produce tertiary-quality effluent suitable for unrestricted reuse — helping clients reduce water bills, environmental impact and drought vulnerability.
What's the difference between SBR, SSB and RBC treatment systems?
All three are biological wastewater treatment technologies but differ significantly. SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor): treats wastewater in sequential phases (fill, react, settle, decant) within a single tank — excellent effluent quality, compact footprint, ideal for hotels and residential. SSB (Submerged Sludge Bed): AQUATO's proprietary variant with stable biology and low-maintenance operation. RBC (Rotating Biological Contactor): uses rotating discs submerged in wastewater where biofilm develops — very low energy consumption, ideal for remote hotel sites and eco-lodges with limited power infrastructure. We recommend the best technology after analysing flow rate, effluent quality required, site constraints and budget.
Can you treat borehole water for drinking purposes?
Yes. We design complete borehole water treatment systems transforming raw groundwater into potable, compliant drinking water. Our standard treatment train includes sand filtration for suspended solids, iron and manganese removal, water softening for hardness reduction, ultrafiltration (UF) for bacterial and viral removal, UV sterilisation and, if required, reverse osmosis (RO) for salinity or TDS reduction. Every system is designed based on a complete laboratory water analysis — ensuring the final water meets WHO drinking water standards for hotels, residential estates and commercial facilities.
How often does a sewage treatment plant need maintenance?
A properly designed sewage treatment plant requires preventive maintenance approximately every 3 months, plus annual desludging and equipment inspection. Our maintenance contracts cover effluent sampling and laboratory analysis, blower servicing, pump checks, membrane cleaning (for UF/RO), sludge management and WMA compliance reporting. Without proper maintenance, systems degrade within 12-18 months — resulting in non-compliance, environmental penalties and costly emergency interventions. All our clients benefit from dedicated maintenance plans with 24/7 emergency intervention.
Do you handle the WMA compliance paperwork?
Yes. We manage the full WMA compliance process for every wastewater project — from initial technical study and EIA clearance through to commissioning and operation. This includes preparation of technical drawings, sizing calculations, discharge permit applications, commissioning documentation and ongoing Effluent Analysis Reports (EAR). Our systems are designed from day one to meet the 15 regulated parameters under Environment Protection Act 2002 — protecting your business from environmental penalties, non-compliance notices and operational disruptions.
